In the center of the star, imposed over the divergent beams, is a convex image of a rectangular rounded at the tip shield with a golden edging. The shield is diagonally painted with cold enamels in the colors of Russian National Flag of using. The embossed inscription in the center of the shield reads: “OMON”.
On the back of the pin badge there is a screw for fastening it to the uniform.
The twelve-pointed star is a traditional police symbol of the excellence of moral merit.
OMON is the Russian abbreviation, which stands for the “Mobile Police Squad of Special Purpose.”
Russian tricolor symbolizes: white – peace, purity, chastity; blue – faith, loyalty and truth; red – persistence, energy, strength, courage and blood shed for the Fatherland.
The Police (formerly Militia) Squad of Special Purpose are the paramilitary units performing hazardous tasks in urban areas, including the seizure and liquidation of armed criminals, forced support of the city police patrols and roadblocks, insurance of law and order at public events, and neutralization of disturbances, including those happen as a result of emergencies, natural and manmade disasters.
These police units are also involved in ensuring order and security in the “hot spots” on the territory of Russia, and are used to prevent unauthorized actions and events.
Typically, compared with the conventional police, the units are armed better, and the officers are trained specially.
