The chest pin badge is a four-pointed cross with flared ends, covered with colored enamel (maroon color – for the first degree, matte black – for the second) on the background of the diverging faceted rays with crossed sheathed swords with hilts pointed upwards.
The central part of the cross is taken by a round medallion of the diameter of 1 inch. The inscription on the white enamel background of the medallion reads: at the top – “For Excellence in Service” at the bottom – “Internal Troops of MVD of Russia”.
In the center of the medallion is a relief image of Russian foot soldier spearing a dragon – a symbol of the struggle of the good against and the evil.
The pin badge of the first degree is made of a goldish metal, the second degree – silvery.
On the back of the pin badge there is a screw pin and a nut for fastening it to the clothes.
The foot soldier spearing a dragon is the figure of St. George.
Maroon is the color of the MIA commandos beret, the color of courage and bravery.
The swords in scabbards are the weapons of Truth and Wisdom. They can be used only if it is impossible to defeat Injustice peacefully.
The pin badge is awarded to the servicemen of the Internal Troops of Russia for the initiative, diligence and distinction displayed in the performance of tasks for the protection of public order, public security, the protection of important public facilities and special cargoes, when escorting prisoners and persons in custody; for active participation and excellence in the elimination of the consequences of the accidents, fires, natural disasters and other emergencies; for high performance in combat training.
The chest pin badge is awarded sequentially: first – the pin badge of the second degree, then – the first degree. It is awarded personally and solemnly. The pin badge is worn on the right side of the chest, below the orders.
The Internal Troops are formed by the army type, but they are not a part of Russian Armed Forces. Structurally the Internal Troops are under Russian Interior Ministry. Their task is to maintain constitutional order and public order in the country. Unlike the Internal Troops, the Army is designed to defend the country against an external enemy. However, in the case of the outside encroachment on the sovereignty of the state – border armed conflict), aggression by another state, – the Internal Troops are involved to repel aggression together with the Army and Border Troops as a part of the Armed Forces of the Ministry of Defence.
Previously, the Internal Troops were used to guard prisons and convoy prisoners, but now these functions are abolished.
Today, the Internal Troops of Russia is a powerful paramilitary formation. Its operative units are fully motorized and have armored vehicles. The structure of the Internal Troops consists of its own aviation, artillery, engineering, and naval units.
