In the centre of the cross there is a round medallion with a relief picture of mountains against the rays of the rising sun, and military helicopters flying over them. In the center there is a cartographic outline of Afghanistan with the deposition of hot spots and the cities of Herat , Kabul, Kandahar.
At the bottom there is a tablet indicating the period of the hostilities – “1979-1989.” The medallion is framed with a wreath of laurel and oak leaves. On the edging of white enamel there is the inscription: “Afghan War Veteran.”
On the back of the commemorative badge there is a screw for fastening it to the military uniform.
The cross indicates the historical link of times and glorious fighting traditions of the Russian army, symbolizes protection of the Homeland and Orthodoxy.
The crossed swords – is a symbol of the armed struggle.
The red is the color of the shed blood, a symbol of strength and courage, the traditional color of the cloth of the ground troops uniform.
The laurel-and-oak wreath is a symbol of courage, strength, perseverance and valor, glory and eternal memory of the fallen.
There are no either USSR or Russian state awards established specially for the Afghan war veterans.
Soviet soldiers were awarded only with the chest badge “Internationalist Serviceman” and a certificate of honor diploma.
Also, there is a medal “From the Grateful People of Afghanistan,” which was given to all those who served in the limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan. However, it is the award of the Republic of Afghanistan. The decree for its establishment was signed on May 15, 1988, the day of the first early withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Jalalabad.
Despite the fact that after the Afghan war a long time has passed, the public organizations and associations of the veterans celebrate the anniversaries memorable dates of the military events.
The jubilee awards are of great value for many of the combatants.
