The commemorative pin is made of a goldish metal with enamel in the form of the red Greek cross with expanding concave ends put over two crossed downward swords. In the centre of the cross there is an additional emblem of the Russian Federation Armed Forces. On the vertical beams of the cross there is a relief text: in the upper part – “15 Years “, in the lower part – an abbreviation “VVD”, which stands for “Veteran of Hostilities.”
The commemorative pin is connected with a loop and a ring to a golden rectangular block, covered with a silk moiré ribbon of the red, blue and white colors – the colors of Russian national flag.
On the reverse side of the badge there is a screw for fastening it to a military uniform.
The commemorative pin is based on the image of the Russian historical award of 1864 – the cross “For Service in the Caucasus “. The stylized image of the “Caucasian” cross points at the historical connection of the times and glorious historical traditions of the North Caucasus Military District, being the successor of the Imperial Caucasus Army, in providing peace and stability in the region.
Crossed swords are the most common traditional symbol of the armed struggle. The downward swords are the symbol of remembrance of the military exploits and the fallen men.
The red color is the symbol of strength and courage, the traditional color of cloth used for military uniform of the ground forces.
The emblem of the ground forces shows belonging to the Russian army. The emblem represents an image of a golden double-headed eagle with outstretched wings, holding a sword in its right paw – a symbol of the protection of the Fatherland, and a laurel wreath in its left hand – a symbol of glory, victory and peace. On the eagle’s breast there is a shield surmounted with a crown. In the red field of the shield there is a horseman slaying a dragon with his spear.
The Russian tricolor on the block symbolises the following: the white color –peace, purity, chastity; the blue – faith, loyalty and truth; the red – persistence, energy, strength, courage and blood, spilt for the homeland.
