“Diesel-electric ship Vitus Bering” is a pin from the rare series “Russia’s Icebreakers”.
The pin is made of aluminum alloy with the safety pin fastening. The method of painting is cold enamel.
“Vitus Bering” is a versatile carrying icebreaker vessel for the Arctic and other regions of the Extreme North. She was launched in 1986. The vessels of this category are constructed for cargo transportation by the Northern Trade Route – the alternative to the route through the Suez Canal.
The type of the vessel: one-screw, two-masted, diesel-electric ship (project 10621 – motorship) with erections and the engine room located at the bow. She has four holds, marine helicopters, platforms on the air cushion and also a deep-water bathyscaphe. Destination: transportation of general, large-size and heavy cargos; liquid cargos; refrigerator cargos, fuel and lubrication, highly flammable materials; coal, ore; dangerously explosive cargos; containers of the international standard.
All vessels of this type allowed the use of two helicopters Mi-8 and Ka-32 for cargo operations with permanent bases aboard.
In 1997 “Vitus Bering” was modified into a floating hotel for 350 persons.
In 2003 she was sold for scrap for $ 1,65 million.
