The Russian Traffic Police (GIBDD) is the division of the Main Directorate for Road Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia (MVD).
The GIBDD is responsible for the regulation of traffic, investigating traffic accidents, and manning the stop lights.
The GIBDD officers are called “inspectors” in Russia.
The official date of formation of Russian State Traffic Safety Inspectorate is July 3, 1936. But the first Russian police authorities supervising observance of the set of traffic rules in St. Petersburg were created by Russian Emperor Peter I in 1719. And in 1809, Russia was created traffic police .
The main attribute and the symbol of traffic police is the striped traffic baton. The black-and-white coloring of the baton was chosen not accidentally: the human eyesight distinguishes these colors most acute. Besides, all colors are grey in the dark, while the black is black and the white is white.
It is interesting, that in most European countries and the USA the traffic police officers do not use batons. They use hand gestures instead. In poor visibility or night, the guards abroad use lights with special nozzles of different colors, and the striped attribute of the traffic police was inherited only by the servicemen in the post-Soviet states.
