The Zenit (zenith) is the trade mark of the former Krasnogorsk Mechanical Works (KMZ) worldwide known for its legendary optical technologies.
Nowadays the plant it is a subdivision of the state corporation “Russian Technologies” (Rostec), but the abbreviation KMZ is still in widely used. The KMZ is famous for producing cameras (Zorki, Zenit, Krasnogorsk), and less known for its successful military optics and mechanical engineering division.
Up to 1949 the KMZ brand logo remained a simple dove prism, nicknamed “grave” by the plant workers. Then it was changed into the prism with a refracted ray of light – the very logo familiar to the army of professional photographers all over the world.
