The 13 stripes symbolize 13 colonies, which formed the independent state of the US in 1776.
The number of the stars in the azure rectangle corresponds to the number of the states. To date there are 50 of them.
The azure rectangle on the left side represents the Union.
The red color of the stripes symbolizes stamina and valor.
The azure color of the rectangle symbolizes diligence, fairness and vigilance.
The white color symbolises innocence and purity.
George Washington explained the design of the flag as follows: “We took the stars from heaven, the red is the color of our native land, the white stripes dividing it means that we have separated from her, and these white stripes will go down in history as a symbol of freedom.”
