Symbols on the clock-face:
At the top of the face, at the level of twelve-hour point, there is a red five-pointed star with a superimposed goldish border.
In the center, in white and blue colors, there is the emblem of the Airborne Forces of the USSR (VDV) – an open parachute with a five-pointed star on the straps and two planers on the sides.
At the bottom of the emblem there is the abbreviation “VDV”. Below – the trademark “Komandirskie” and the nameplate of the watch factory “Vostok”.
Below the six-hour point there is the inscription “Made in Russia”.
Application: numeric indexes of each hour point are carved out of metal (brass) and attached to the surface of the face.
The red five-pointed star is the emblem of the Soviet and Russian Armies, the ancient symbol of protection and power. The border of the star stands for the firelight of the Revolution.
Blue is the traditional color of Russian paratroopers’ beret. It symbolizes the peaceful sky. Also, the blue color is a symbol of honor and loyalty.
The white color of the parachute symbolises purity of thought, belief in a just cause.
The planes are the delivery vehicles of paratroopers on the battlefield.
The open canopy is a symbol of readiness to fight both on land and in the air.
The Airborne emblem was established in 1955. Author: Zinaida Bocharov – a draftsman of the Staff. The Airborne motto is: “Nobody but us!”
In the army folklore Russian Airborne Troops (VDV) are called the “Troops of Uncle Vasya” in honor of their founder – General Vasily Margelov. The abbreviation sometimes also stands for ” Two Hundred Variants are Possible”, “Your Girl are Widows”, “Hardly Go Back Home”, etc.
On the back cover (caseback) of stainless steel there is an image of the Russian Federation State Emblem. It is circumferentially surrounded by embossed inscription detached by two stars: “RUSSIA” “WATERPROOF”.
The bracelet is made of genuine leather. The stiffening ribs, stamped on the bracelet, increase its life and make it more comfortable to wear.
Since 1965, this mechanical watch has won recognition and trust due to its high accuracy, surplus stocks of reliability and resistance to environmental stress.
Vostok Komandirskie were designed by Russian engineers for use in extremely harsh environments, where there is often no capacity for competent service of the mechanism. At the core of the watch are a reliable shock resistant mechanism,a dust and waterproof case and a special spherical glass.
During “Operation Desert Storm” U.S. military appreciated the practicality of this watch. Ten thousand copies of Vostok Komandirskie with commemorative symbols were made for the participants of the Operation under Ministry of Defense’s order. These watches are valuable relics, kept today in many American families.
