The Police (formerly Militia) Squad of Special Purpose (OMON) are the paramilitary units performing hazardous tasks in urban areas, including the seizure and liquidation of armed criminals, forced support of the city police patrols and roadblocks, insurance of law and order at public events, and neutralization of disturbances, including those happen as a result of emergencies, natural and manmade disasters.
These police units are also involved in ensuring order and security in the “hot spots” on the territory of Russia, and are used to prevent unauthorized actions and events.
Typically, compared with the conventional police, the units are armed better, and the officers are trained specially.
