The bat with spread webbed wings – a silent dweller of night – is the emblem of special force and military intelligence units. The emblem appeared due to the inclusion of night glider flights into the training program of the Special Force of the Principal Intelligence Agency of the USSR.
The telescopic sight is a symbol of the special sniper training.
The white colour of the edging symbolises purity of thoughts and faith in the just cause.
The blue colour of the background is the traditional colour of the Russian paratroopers’ beret, and symbolises the peaceful sky. The blue color is a symbol of honor and fidelity. The blue is the traditional color of Airborne Troops, the both symbolizing readiness and ability to fight on the ground and in the air.
The image of a bat was first used by the Royal US Air Force during World War I.
Later it was also used by the US Marine Corps.
And during World War II the image of a bat spread in the air forces of Canada and the South African Union.
Ukraine and Belarus still use a “bat” on sleeve insignia.
