The idea to establish Special Forces appeared during the preparation for the 1980 Olympics.
Everyone still remembered the failure of the police operation to free hostages in Munich.
Therefore on December 29, 1977 the first in the USSR special forces unit (known as “Vityaz”) was formed on the base of the 9th Company of the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Regiment of the Dzerzhinsky Division.
The unit at the time was called “The training company of special purpose” and was intended to provide security during the 1980 Olympic Games.
Training programs for future Interior Ministry special forces were perfected and tested on the basis of this company. One of the main objectives of the company to fight against the very audacious manifestations of criminal.
Back in the late 70s of the 20th century, the emblem of the special forces unit, designed by the artist Kryuchkov, was a clenched fist, cracking down on the enemy in a direct hit.
The “Flying Fist”, as a symbol of hand-to-hand fighting, became a visual attribute of the units of “force action”.
