The inscriptions on the perimeter of the sleeve patch:
at the top – the abbreviation of the Armed Forces of Russia;
at the bottom – “Military Intelligence.”
The greenish-brown color (khaki) is the traditional color used in military uniform in order to camouflage.
The black bat with spread wings is the symbol of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces.
In 1993, a bat on the background of the globe became the official symbol of the Military Intelligence and some units of the Special Forces (Spetsnaz).
The image of a bat was first used by the Royal US Air Force during World War I.
Later it was also used by the US Marine Corps.
And during World War II the image of a bat spread in the air forces of Canada and the South African Union. Ukraine and Belarus still use a “bat” on sleeve insignia.
