The Airborne Troops (Vozdushno-Desantnye Vojska, VDV) are known in the army folklore as “Vojska Dyadi Vasi” (Uncle Basil’s Troops) under the name of their founder – General Vassilij Margelov. The abbreviation VDV sometimes jokily stands for “Two hundred variants are possible”, “Your girls are widows”, “I’ll hardly be back home”, etc.
The Airborne Forces are the reserve of the President of the Russian Federation.
They are able independently or as a part of the ground troops to solve military tasks both in a large-scale war or a local conflict.
VDV are completely airmobile and independent in fightings.
In case of emergency they can land by parachutes in the regions which are unavailable for other types of troops.
The Airborne Forces are intended to envelop the enemy in the air and fight in his rear.
In peacetime the functions of the troops include the conduction of peacekeeping operations to maintain peace in unstable regions in accordance with international obligations.
The Airborne Troops are among the best trained military units of the Russian Army.
