The sleeve patch of the maroon color – the color of the Special Forces, – in the center of which there is the symbol of all special units of the Internal Troops since the Soviet times – the fist over of the machine gun – showing speed, strength and confidence.
In the background, one after another, there are the MIA emblem (shield and sword) and the State Symbols of Russia – the double-headed eagle on a background of the tri-color flag.
Along the perimeter of the sleeve patch there is the inscription: “Special Forces Detachment.”
On the goldish curly ribbon there is the name of the Detachment – “SKIF”.
The squad of special purpose “Skif” was formed on July 7, 1997 on the basis of the Rostov Special Operations Battalion of the Internal Troops of Russia. The members of the squad were slected from the best fighters of the special purpose groups of operational units of the North Caucasus Military District.
In 1999, the unit took an active part in the events in Dagestan. On August 7, the “Scythians” were alerted and deployed to Makhachkala, where the commandos along with other units of the Internal Troops stemmed the tide of Basayev’s and Khattab’s militants.
The detachment worked efficiently in Grozny, where managed to defuse a well-trained group of saboteurs specializing in the installation of land mines on roads and streets. Unfortunately it was not lossless.
For all the years of its existence the squad have gained significant level of professionalism and extraordinary combat experience. There was formed a decent team tested in combat conditions.
Many of the servicemen hold the highest Spetsnaz insignia – the maroon beret.
