The shield is painted in the colors of the airborne troops banner. Blue and green colors symbolize the ability to conduct combat operations both in the air and on the ground.
A parachute with soaring wings is a symbol of the “winged infantry”, a means of paratroopers delivery to the battlefield.
The Division’s talisman is ounce (northern leopard) symbolizing the specifics of the most northern Russian airborne division – force, tenacity, endurance.
The order of the USSR Minister of Defence of April 20, 1985 enlisted V.F.Margelov – the founder of the Airborne Troops – as the Soldier in Honour in the Division’s lists.
At the heart of the emblem of the 76th Airborne Division is the emblem of the city of Pskov, where the Division is located.
The emblem is a heraldic shield in the blue field of which a golden ounce is placed, and a right hand coming out of him from the silver clouds.
The ounce symbolizes the specifics of the most northern Russian airborne division – force, tenacity, endurance.
The 76th is the oldest Russian Airborne Division, established in 1939. The combat path of the Division during the Second World War is a unique one.
The Division took part in the defense of Odessa, Sevastopol, Kerch, Stalingrad,which later became the Hero-Cities.
After going through the Kursk Bulge, crossing the Dnieper, fighting in Belarus, the division ended the War in Germany.
In 1988, the paratroopers of the Division participated in the mitigation of earthquake in Armenia, and in July 1994 the Division held joint exercises with French paratroopers for the first time in the country’s history.
In January 1995 the Pskov paratroopers were in the midst of urban combat in Grozny – seized the famous Minutka square and Dudayev’s presidential palace.
During the second campaign in Chechnya the Pskov paratroopers battalion led fierce battles with separatists in the Kadar zone.
They also released Gudermes, Argun, Avgury and Shali from the armed groups. In Fedruary, 29 – March, 1, 2000 the 6th company of the 104th regiment of the Pskov paratroopers covered itself with immortal glory, taking the fight at the height of 776 against two thousand armed men of Basayev and Khattab’s gang.
