The combat path of the Division, formed at 1944, laid across Karelia, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia. The division became famous for extremely decisive action during crossing the river Svir in Summer of 1944, and for the paratroopers’ courage shown in the struggle against the selective SS panzer units in Spring of 1945 in Hungary.
After the collapse of the USSR the Division was relocated from Moldova to Ivanovo.
In the first Chechen campaign the paratroopers of the 98th Division released Hankala and North Airport “Severny” from the armed groups, and in the Second Campaign – Vedeno, Novogroznensk and Nozhai-Yurt districts of Chechnya.
