A dog tag is the informal name for the identification tags worn by soldiers, named such since it resembles actual dog tags. The tag is primarily used for the identification of essential basic medical information, such as blood type and history of vaccinations, along with providing religious preference.
Dog tags are usually made of a corrosion-resistant metal or stainless-steel.
In the US Army, wearing of the tag is obligatory to wearing by soldiers in the battle-field. One tag is worn on a long chain around the neck; the other – on a much smaller chain attached to the first chain.
Alternatively, some units allow or require each soldier to wear one tag laced into their boot in lieu of the second one around the neck.
Dog tags have recently paved their way into youth fashion and subculture. Originally worn as a part of a military uniform by the youth who wishes to present a tough or militaristic image, dog tags have then penetrated wider fashion circles. They may be inscribed with a person’s details, their beliefs or tastes, a favorite quotation, or may bear the name or logo of a band or performer.
Some people also like to have the information on their tags transferred to a smaller, sometimes gold or silver tag by a jeweler, as the original tag can be considered to be too large and bulky.
Some tags (along with similar items such as MedicAlert bracelets) identify that their wearers have problems with health that may: suddenly put their wearers out of action and render them inefficient of providing treatment guidance (as in the cases of heart diseases, epilepsy, or diabetes); interact adversely with medical treatments, especially standard or “first-line” ones (as in the case of an allergy to common drugs or a religious, moral, or other objection to artificial reanimation), if a first responder tries to conduct such treatment when the wearer is nonresponsive and thus unable to prevent from doing so.
In its form a dog tag is a rectangular plate with rounded ends, with ribbed stiffener along the perimeter and pierced at the top for the cord, ring or chain.
The reverse side of the tag is supposed to put on engraving with personal information, memorial dates, verses, congratulations and other texts of your own choice.
The dog tag is supplied in complete with two strong ball chains – 23 5/8 inch and 2 7/16 inch, for the purpose of wearing it on the neck as an amulet or using it as a trinket for the bunch of keys, different fasteners on the clothes, purse, handbag, pouch, messenger bag and so on.
